About the photograph
I have always felt that robust pine needles and snow belong together, their strength and structure providing the perfect resting place for winter’s softness. On this occasion, hoar frost and fresh snow had combined—something I had never witnessed before—to envelop every cluster of needles in intricate white detail, creating a mesmerising winter crown.
I felt no need to show the tree in its entirety; the photograph was always going to be about the dense detail held within its canopy. By moving closer and allowing that detail to fill the frame, the familiar pine became almost abstract—a layered arrangement of feathered frost, soft snow and glimpses of dark wood beneath. Seen at this intimate scale, it became one of winter’s rarest gems: a crown fashioned entirely by the elements.
