About the photograph
Every so often, deep within a woodland, I encounter a gathering of trees whose gestures and relationships seem to tell a story. Each viewer may imagine a different exchange; my own interpretation may be less than charitable, but as I composed this scene I could see only an argument unfolding between members of the same family. I discovered these beautifully shaped trees in April 2016, then waited patiently until December, when the light, colour and mood offered the balance I had imagined.
Storms and passing years had already left their mark on these ageing trees, but the scene has since almost entirely disappeared following felling. Woodlands can feel like places where time stands still, until a familiar view vanishes and reveals how vulnerable they are to sudden change. A place we enjoy today may be unrecognisable tomorrow, turning photographs like this into both memory and record. All the more reason to notice what is here—and to treasure every moment before it changes.
