About the photograph
No matter how well I think I know a woodland—or even individual trees—it continues to surprise me. Returning with an open mind and a fresh perspective allows familiar elements to form unexpected relationships, revealing compositions that may have been waiting unseen for years.
On this particular day, mist, water, autumn bracken and the reaching limbs of the oaks aligned in a way I had never witnessed before and perhaps never will again. Pale water shimmered through the trees while the marcescent oak leaves flickered like flames. In my continuing quest to capture the essence of a place, this remains a firm favourite: I can still feel the moisture in the air, smell autumn in the wet earth and imagine the quiet conversations passing between the whispering trees.
