About the photograph
I first found this gathering of moorland birches in early 2023 and immediately knew the photograph I ultimately wanted to make: this composition transformed by hoar frost. In the years that followed, that imagined scene remained in my mind—the trees standing together on the open moor, every fine branch picked out in white.
In January 2026, I returned to find not frost but snow so delicate that it rested upon even the finest twigs, creating much of the same magic I had hoped for. Mist drifted across the moor and softened the rising sun, surrounding the birches with an extraordinary stillness. Photography gives us a reason to be present—to return, to wait and to keep looking—and every now and then, that patience is rewarded with nature’s own artistry and the gift of quiet company.
