About the photograph

While traversing the steep wooded slopes, I noticed a soft white glow in the canopy of a large tree some distance away. Intrigued, I picked my way through a maze of hawthorn and across a shallow stream until I reached its broad, riven base. I was thrilled to discover a goat willow—a species I had never previously encountered in my local woodlands.

Its delicate canopy was a marvel: an intricate network of branches dotted with luminous catkins and held in the gentle glow of the rising sun. The photograph was first exhibited in *All the Wood’s a Stage* at Nunnington Hall in 2025–26. Shakespeare inspired the exhibition title, while the story of Ophelia falling from a willow into the brook in *Hamlet* gave this image its name, *Ophelia’s Witness*. It rewards slow looking, with countless fine details that reveal themselves most fully in print.
