About the photograph
Although this is one of my older woodland photographs, it is an image that has stood the test of time. I rarely include man-made elements in my work, but I am drawn to places where nature is slowly reclaiming its territory—particularly old boundary walls that have outlived their original purpose. Here, stones once arranged to divide the land have begun to settle back into the woodland.
The remains of the wall and great tumbled rocks provide a weighty counterpoint to the delicate ferns and fresh spring leaves of the birches. Some photographers might be tempted to ‘tidy’ the scene by removing fallen branches, but I have always embraced these apparent imperfections as essential details. They allow the woodland to remain honest, untamed and entirely itself.
