About the photograph

Oak trees seem only to become more beautiful—and more valuable to the life around them—as they age. Their broken limbs, sagging boughs and exposed deadwood are not flaws, but records of endurance and habitats in their own right. I am especially drawn to the meeting of living and dead wood, and to the way those ageing forms contrast with the fresh, life-affirming greens of spring.

To make this image, I climbed onto a boulder and balanced precariously while carefully refining the composition. The great oak was the apparent subject, but the photograph needed to say more than that. By embracing the quieter elements around it—the fresh growth, moss-covered rocks and trees receding into mist—I could give greater meaning to the oak’s sprawling limbs and reveal something of the complex, unruly nature of the place it calls home.
