About the photograph
The photographs were not coming easily on a day of flat light and gusting wind in a challenging location. Yet perseverance eventually led me to this intimate scene, where the subdued light and rain-saturated colours became the day’s strengths.
I have always believed that the scene should dictate the aspect ratio. Here, sodden rowan branches, draped in lichen and embellished with clusters of red berries, formed a natural frame for the woodland beyond. The square composition helped distil and contain its complexity into something coherent, while those bright berries transformed the muted scene into something both beautiful and strangely festive.
