About the photograph
“When in the woods, don’t look for trees” is something I said in a video in 2020. The idea is deceptively simple: a photograph of a tree does not necessarily need to be about the tree itself. Its true subject might instead be rhythm, line, texture, colour or the relationships formed within the frame.
Here, a fallen Scots pine became a beautiful abstraction, its interwoven branches and fading needles forming an intricate field of muted colour and fine detail. I have long been fascinated by tree canopies and their complex branch networks, and framing the scene tightly allowed that world to become the subject in its own right. Removed from its wider context, the familiar becomes ambiguous—a reminder that beauty does not disappear as life recedes.
