About the photograph
The Woodland Sanctuary exhibition in 2022 left me feeling inspired and rejuvenated, and once again I sought the thrill of exploration and discovery that has driven so much of my work. Before long, I found this mighty veteran oak rooted at the very edge of a rock face—an extraordinary survivor in a seemingly precarious position.
I was fascinated by the contradiction it embodied: immense strength and endurance, yet an equal sense of vulnerability. In that uneasy balance, I recognised something of the human condition—strength does not free us from vulnerability; often, the two exist side by side. I rarely photograph trees from such a low perspective, but looking upwards gave this veteran the commanding presence it deserved, clinging with quiet defiance to life on the edge.
