About the photograph
Sometimes a title reveals itself while I am editing an image or preparing it for publication. The best titles, however, tend to arrive in the moment—when I feel deeply connected to a scene and stories, characters and metaphors begin to play out before me. Inspiration can come from anywhere: film, literature, folklore or personal experience.
The battered, stumpy fellow to the right immediately reminded me of the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, defiantly dismissing his injuries with the famous line: “It’s just a flesh wound.” A photograph should always speak for itself, but the right title can open another door—offering a glimpse into the artist’s imagination and perhaps encouraging the viewer to see more than trees.
