About the photograph
When wandering through unfamiliar woodland, I am often drawn to trees that appear out of place: old, wise-looking relics whose twisting forms speak of the changes they have witnessed, standing apart from their younger neighbours. I found this imposing pair of oaks one afternoon in Snowdonia and returned early the following morning, hoping for mist, soft light and the atmospheric experience I so often crave.
Once I have visualised a composition, I usually have to wait many months—sometimes years—for the conditions that will bring it fully to life, but this time I got lucky. It was awe-inspiring to watch the early light catch the fading mist and illuminate the space between the almost symmetrical oaks. Standing like guardians on either side, the trees formed a gateway into the magical and restorative world of the forest.
