About the photograph
I discovered this stand of Scots pines in 2020 and was so excited by their presence that I found myself talking aloud to Meg about how wonderful they were. Translating that enthusiasm into photographs proved far more difficult; their scale and openness resisted an easy composition. The opportunity I had been waiting for finally arrived in February 2025, during a short-lived snowfall, when fresh snow and weathered Scots pines seemed made for one another.
This stout granny pine caught my attention as she appeared to take shelter beneath the taller tree beside her. The arrangement felt unconventional, yet somehow made perfect sense. After carefully refining the composition, I lay in the snow and made a sequence of frames, watching subtle changes in light and mood pass through the scene. Like so many grandparents, these granny pines possess a quiet but remarkable resilience, enduring year after year as the elements shape their weathered forms on this exposed Scottish mountainside.
