About the photograph
I have walked beneath this rowan many times as it gently arches over a boggy path descending into a sheltered, characterful corner of the North York Moors. On this morning, a rare hoar frost—seemingly confined to this small pocket of the moors—transformed the familiar landscape. It was the first photograph I made during a wonderful morning spent experiencing and capturing its fleeting beauty.
Every branch of the rowan had been finely traced in white, while the frosted grasses and old stone wall drew the eye down the path and into the valley. Drifting fog softened the distant slope and gave the tree much-needed separation from the woodland behind, adding layered depth and quiet mystery to a place I thought I knew so well.
