About the photograph
Few woodlands have challenged me as much as this one, and that is precisely why I have enjoyed spending time there. Creatively, there is immense satisfaction in translating complexity into beauty. The process can be therapeutic, too: it demands such concentration that everything else recedes, and what initially appears chaotic gradually reveals itself as nature’s own order—each tree adapting to the light, terrain and those growing around it.
I had been searching for a composition that brought several hazel trees together in an almost poetic exchange. Hazel is often overlooked in favour of the commanding presence of ancient oaks, so it felt particularly satisfying to let its quieter, more fluid character take centre stage. Here, long-reaching limbs flow gracefully towards one another, creating connections across the woodland and guiding the eye through its many layers. Soft mist quietened the background just enough for those gestures to emerge, bringing a sense of fluency to a scene of remarkable complexity. It became my most rewarding composition of the year.
