About the photograph
I clearly remember discovering this remarkable family of Scots pines in March 2017 while trudging through a beautiful Caledonian forest. I was immediately drawn to the gestures and grouping of several generations, gathered before the mountainous backdrop as though posing for a family portrait. I knew then that this was a family I would want to revisit and work with whenever I returned to the area.
On my third visit, in February 2019, I was greeted by an exceptionally crisp and calm morning. Mist drifted over the loch, while bitter frost lent the pines and heather a cool grey tone. Crouching in the crunchy snow, I slowly pieced together the composition, searching for the point at which every shape and relationship found its place. The frost-muted family stood in beautiful contrast to the distant mountains, glowing warmly in the first sunlight of the day.
