About the photograph
I admit to feeling slightly concerned as I led a workshop group into this secluded Scottish woodland. Bright afternoon sunlight and gusting wind are usually considered unfavourable for woodland photography. Yet by embracing rather than resisting them, I made my favourite autumn image of 2022.
I waited for a strong gust, allowing the backlit downy birch leaves to sweep and blur through the frame. Their movement created an impressionistic veil of gold and a wonderful sense of energy, set against the tactile detail of lichen-crusted bark and the rich, wispy understorey. In the lower centre, a knot of dark branches formed the shape of an eye, peering between the trees as though the woodland itself were watching my every move.
