About the photograph
The Covid-19 lockdown restrictions had only just begun to ease, and once again I was free to explore the woodlands close to home. In the absence of people, nature seemed to have burst into life. With the comforting scent of bluebells, life-affirming greens and cheerful birdsong all around me, being back among the trees had never felt so restorative.
That renewed sense of hope had a lasting influence on how I interpreted scenes such as this. I no longer saw fallen trees as reflections of my own struggles, but as essential parts of a healthy woodland cycle. As old wood slowly returns to the earth, it enriches the soil and creates space for new life—a quiet reminder that an ending can also be an act of renewal.
