About the photograph
Having scouted this area in September 2020, I returned in the months that followed with several compositions already in mind. After a challenging week, I was rewarded on the final morning with conditions that felt both ethereal and awe-inspiring.
This gathering of downy birch appeared to sway and dance across the hillside, their sculptural forms dressed in the last gold of autumn. The dissipating mist softened the blue sky to the palest hue, creating a delicate contrast with the warmth of their crowns. For a brief moment, the trees seemed to be celebrating together—a quiet woodland party unfolding above the heather.
