About the photograph
Having first photographed this beautifully sculptural birch in the autumn of 2020, I returned in February 2022 to find both tree and landscape transformed by a blizzard. Storm Eunice brought plummeting temperatures and powerful winds, creating near-whiteout conditions. Spindrift reduced the distant trees to ghostly forms and softened the exposed heather, stripping the landscape back to an almost monochromatic study of shape and tone — and creating an experience I will always cherish.
Working in such weather is physically demanding, but for me, experiencing nature at its extremes is part of understanding and appreciating all its different shades. Against the storm, the birch’s finest branches appeared impossibly brittle, as though they might yield at any moment. Yet its wonderful form endured: a delicate, resilient character standing in quiet defiance of the elements.
