Delicate Defiance

Description

Having first photographed this beautifully sculptured tree in the autumn of 2020, I returned to enjoy an entirely different experience and aesthetic during a blizzard in 2022. Storm Eunice brought plummeting temperatures and strong winds creating almost whiteout conditions. Spindrifts obscured distant trees, softened the exposed heather, and ensured an experience in the landscape that I’ll cherish. Working in such conditions is challenging, but I believe the extremes of nature must be experienced to enjoy all its different shades. The fine branches of the winter birch appear so brittle, but this resilient character is defiant in maintaining its wonderful form.
