About the photograph
I first photographed this wonderful veteran oak on a moody winter morning, in the kind of conditions many woodland photographers would yearn for. Yet it was a cloudy, windswept afternoon in early summer that revealed its character most eloquently.
Against the lush foliage, its bare-boned form emerged with striking clarity. Soft, diffuse light settled upon the oak’s pale, weathered limbs, tracing every contortion, break and scar accumulated over its long life. Amid the vitality of summer, those ageing branches seemed more expressive than ever. The contrast between fresh growth and weathered bones held past and present together—a tree shaped by time, yet still commanding its place on the woodland fringe.
