About the photograph
I always photograph trees, but some of my photographs are not simply about the tree itself. The idea behind an image may be more concerned with form, texture or pattern; in this case, it was the balance and flow of colour that held my attention.
It is certainly a magnificent beech, its bold, sculptural form providing a strong foundation for the scattering of delicate leaves and richly layered autumn colour against the cool tones of the valley beyond. Images such as this are difficult to time, as the ideal balance of leaf colour and density is fleeting. It was therefore a real pleasure to make this during an autumn that seemed to linger a little longer than most.
