One-to-One Woodland Photography
Personal, unhurried tuition in the woodlands of the North York Moors
Tailored around you
A one-to-one workshop gives us the freedom to shape the day entirely around you and your photography.
We’ll spend time exploring some of the woodlands I know best in and around the North York Moors, working at a relaxed pace and responding to the conditions and opportunities we find.
There’s no fixed formula. You might want to develop stronger compositions, make more sense of complex woodland scenes, become more confident with your camera, or simply slow down and find a more considered way of working in the landscape.
I’ve spent many years returning to these woods in every season and condition. Rather than rushing between locations, we’ll give ourselves the time to observe, explore possibilities and talk through the decisions that go into making a photograph.
What we can work on
The day is shaped around your photography, so we can spend as much or as little time as you need on particular areas.
That might include finding and refining compositions in complex woodland, simplifying busy scenes, working with changing light, developing your visual awareness or becoming more confident with the technical side of photography.
We can also look beyond individual photographs and talk about developing projects, building a more coherent body of work, editing images or preparing photographs for print.
You don’t need to arrive with a list of problems to solve. Sometimes the most useful thing is simply having the time to photograph together, talk through decisions as they happen and see where the day leads.
A day in the woods
Woodland photography rewards patience, so I don’t run workshops to a rigid timetable or rush from one location to another.
My approach is relaxed and conversational. I’ll photograph alongside you where appropriate, explain what I’m noticing and thinking about, and give you plenty of space to develop your own ideas as the day unfolds.
The aim isn’t for you to leave with photographs that look like mine, but to help you become more confident in recognising and developing the photographs that feel like yours.
Above all, I want the day to be enjoyable. Good photographs matter, of course, but so does spending meaningful time outdoors, slowing down and coming home feeling inspired to photograph again.
