About the photograph
I don’t have to be in a woodland to be thinking about trees. Anything tree-related in everyday life draws me towards it and invites a closer look, whether it is a piece of pottery at a small craft fair or an unfamiliar, non-native species in a specialist garden centre. Curiosity has a habit of forming connections that may only reveal their value later.
In early December 2022, I encountered the Wishing Tree at Blenheim Palace—an illuminated artificial tree to which visitors tied ribbons before making a Christmas wish. Later that month, I was fortunate enough to photograph this enchanting birch with its delicate frost-laden branches cascading like pale ribbons. The association was immediate, and the title seemed inevitable: *The Wishing Tree*.
